Badgers division

This program is a great way to get ready for middle school teams, with competitive competition against nearby towns. South Jersey Field Hockey league is a competitive travel league and will really help to raise your player’s game by playing for a longer season than the middle schools. Players will learn fundamentals of the sport, field positioning, improve stick skills, plus sportsmanship, teamwork, and make new friends all over Cherry Hill and from neighboring towns! There is no tryout for this team and players are split evenly between teams by skill (no A/B) and there is an effort to put friends together!
Fall season
Registration is held May – June for the fall season. Included in each registration is a new uniform (reversible team jersey, skort, and home and away socks for games and practices. All other fees are included, including for game referees, league, field usage, insurance, and team equipment.
Regular season games are played over 6 Sundays, starting after Labor Day. (skip weekend of league tournament) There are 8 games played at the opponent’s field in South Jersey or home at Cherry Hill High School East. We play games on turf and grass, and will have at least one home game.
Playoffs are the last weekend in October for the top 12 teams in the league.
Practices start mid-August at Cherry Hill HS East, on Tuesdays and Thursdays 6-8:00 pm. All players in this age division practice together.
The registration fee for 5th/6th is $180 per player. There is a late fee of $15 for registering after July 1st.
Equipment
All players will need shin guards, a mouthguard, and a field hockey stick. They will need cleats for playing on grass, and can wear sneakers or turf shoes for playing on turf. Corner masks are recommended but not required for this age division.
Field hockey sticks
The proper stick size contributes to a fun and enjoyable introductory experience. On average, the field hockey stick should measure up to the height of the player’s hip. Players this age will need a 30″ stick if player is 4’1″ – 4’3″ tall, or 32″ stick if 4’4″ – 4’6″. Stick length is determined by height.
Both right hand and left hand dominant players use the same stick. Due to this, right hand dominant players may have earlier success in passing and receiving, whereas the left hand dominant players may have earlier success in dribbling skills.
We recommend going to HerSport in Cherry Hill for help with selecting the right length stick for your player. Please refer to the guidelines in the stick chart below:

You can also order gear on longstreth.com. They have beginner sets of a stick, ball, shinguards, and mouthguard for $55. https://longstreth.com/collections/beginner-field-hockey-equipment. USA Field Hockey also sells sticks starting at $13! https://usafh.myshopify.com/apps/bundles/bundle/65528
Play for the Cause Tournament
The league organizes an annual charity tournament over Columbus Day weekend benefiting a family within the league. There will be three 7v7 games on Saturday and bracketed playoffs on Sunday. Held at Gloucester Twp Park. Excellent playing and fundraising experience!
Volunteer coaches are highly needed for this age division! Please indicate if you can coach while registering.
